ABB and Stadler Collaborate to Advance US Passenger Rail

Metra's New Battery-Powered Trainsets

Metra, set to become one of the first US train operators to operate full battery-powered trainsets, accepted delivery in June 2024 for eight two-car trainsets.
Each trainset will be used to circulate in the Chicago area and will be equipped with Pro 8C batteries and CC750 DC traction converters.
ABB's efficient, low-maintenance traction converters are optimized to maintain the trainsets' optimal performance levels, while Metra will also be able to reduce their CO2 emissions using the battery system.

Caltrans' Hydrogen Passenger Trains

Caltrans signed a historic deal with Stadler US for North American hydrogen passenger trains.
There will be 10 trainsets in the fleet, and each will be equipped with Pro 8C traction batteries, CC750 DC traction converters, and CC400 DC traction converters by ABB.
The fuel cell integration traction converter plays an important role in hydrogen trains, which helps in efficient propulsion that is low on power consumption and emissions.

Final Assembly and Testing at ABB's Traction Factory

Final assembly and testing of the equipment for these trainsets will be done at ABB's Traction factory in Mechanicsville, Virginia, where about 100 experienced production staff are employed.

ABB's Commitment to Sustainable Transportation

Since 2010, ABB has spent more than $14 billion on US plant expansions, operational improvements, best-in-class equipment, products, and people.

"Our collaboration with Stadler is a demonstration of our dedication to green transport solutions," commented Edgar Keller, President, ABB Traction division.
"By joining forces with our advanced technology and in-country manufacturing expertise, we are contributing to the transition towards cleaner rail transport."

"By integrating ABB's traction batteries and converters into our trainsets, we're not just optimizing our fleets for efficiency and reliability, but part of a cutting-edge transit future," declared Martin Ritter, CEO Division North America, Stadler.
He went on to say, "This partnership is a reflection of our commitment to bringing innovative solutions that will benefit communities across the country."

Creating Sustainable Rail Transport

The collaboration between ABB and Stadler is a significant step forward in the development of cleaner rail transportation in the US.
With their technology and local production, they are driving the change towards cleaner rail transport.
